Rotherham (@1.8) vs Shrewsbury (@4.4)

Our Prediction:

Rotherham will win

Rotherham – Shrewsbury Match Prediction | 21-09-2019 10:00

If they can grab a goal on the counter, then theyll hold onto it for dear life, as they did both home and away against Lee Bowyers Charlton to earn their place at Wembley. Not only are Shrewsbury tough to beat, but theyre a threat on the break. If Rotherham fail to breach the Shrews early on, then theyll struggle. Charlton needed an early goal to draw Shrewsbury out in the semis and they failed to get it.

Things didn't quite go according to plan in the Championship and they find themselves back as a bigger fish in the smaller pond of League One. Manager Paul Warne is still at the helm, which reflects an understanding of the difficulty of transitioning to the Championship. When last we met, Shrewsbury and Rotherham played out the Play-Off final for a place in the Championship, with the Millers winning after extra time. Tonight, Shrewsbury Town take on Rotherham United in the Carabao Cup.

Anthony Backhouse from Cumbria is in his third season as a Football League Referee and officiated in the Conference before that. The season before saw him at the Meadow again, this time for the 2-2 draw against Doncaster. He was in charge at Montgomery Waters Meadow when Charlton beat us 3-0 last seasons and also when we drew 0-0 at home against AFC Wimbledon.

We've played Rotherham 63 times over the years and we've won 28 of them, with the Millers winning 20. In all that time, neither Rotherham nor Town have scored more than four goals against the other in the league and only one team has scored more than four in cup competitions with the Millers winning 5-2 at Gay Meadow in January 1966 in the League Cup. I've already covered our most recent meeting but we also have a defeat in the Football League trophy in the 1990's to forget.

Coming into the second leg of the playoff first round, the tie was knotted up at 2-2 between Rotherham and Scunthorpe. Up stepped Will Vaulks to make sure that his side went through. On the cusp of half time, they grabbed the lead through Richard Wood, in large part due to the pass from Vaulks. He would then all but seal it up when he scored a goal in the 63rd minute of the match to put them into this big money playoff final.

I think we can win tonight, Rotherham doesnt look to have quite got used to League One again yet and it might be a good time to play them. However, they carry a potent threat that we know about in Freddie Ladapo and Carlton Morris and I'm reminded of how strikers often score against old clubs! I like this competition; it's become an opportunity for clubs like us to get some national exposure and a little extra money earlier in the season. Hopefully, our defence has enough know-how to keep them at bay and the rest of the team can push on and put us into the draw for the next round. Their lack of recent clean sheets is encouraging and hopefully, we can extend that run for them.

Were therefore predicting a very even match with a 1-1 draw at the end of the 90 minutes. Lets see what happens, but it could well be that we end up with scores level. In our opinion, Rotherham United and Shrewsbury Town could both end up scoring in what appears to be a good match-up, with little separating these two teams.

I also thought that using Shaun Whalley in what looked like a withdrawn forward position worked really well, particularly in the first half when he made a huge difference using his pace and desire to put pressure on MK's defence. There were a fair few positives from the game though, having lost Ro-Shaun Williams, Omar Beckles slotted in and looked the part as we handled what MK tried to throw at us. Our form has been equally mixed with the win at home to Portsmouth followed by a heart-breaking defeat in injury time at Milton Keynes. It meant they weren't able to think about what to do with the ball because they were too busy trying to keep it from Shaun Whalley. I thought we'd done more than enough to deserve at least a point but fate decided otherwise.

Ladapo immediately repaid Rotherham's faith in him by scoring on his debut against Wimbledon. Pre-season brought forth the usual raft of changes in personnel after relegation with midfielder Will Vaulks 2 million+ move to Cardiff and the 500,000 purchase of ex-Town loan striker Freddie Ladapo from Plymouth taking the pre-season headlines. The Millers have also brought in another ex-Town loan Striker Carlton Morris but have seen ex-Town winger Jon Taylor leave at the end of his contract and sign for Doncaster.

Admittedly, the Shrews offer less going forward, but that wont bother them. Paul Hursts men have been a thorn in the side of teams all season long, especially those who like to get forward, so its tough to see why theyre not more fancied in the betting. After they kept Charlton at bay before striking on the break, the team who finished third during the regular season will certainly fancy their chances to snatch this one.

Whether they come out on top or not, the tactics of Hursts men should ensure that this is a cagey and ultimately low-scoring affair, as many of their matches this season have been. Unsurprisingly 67% of Shrewsburys League One games have seen less than three goals go in this season. Keeping this in mind, its easy to feel that a low-scoring game could present itself at Wembley on Sunday.

Much like the Championship Playoff Final, this League One Playoff Final will be contested between the third and fourth placed teams. So, in theory, these two teams are the best two in the playoffs, meaning it should be the best possible final we can hope for. Shrewsbury, while far off the pace of the top two in the end, still had an outstanding season. They amassed a ton of points, 87, and they easily finished in third place. However, that only gets you a place in the playoffs, and they will still have to earn their place in the Championship with a win here. Their opponents Rotherham also had a very good season, but they finished a full eight points off their pace. Despite that, they were hardly ever in danger of not making the playoffs, and the fourth place finish was fairly academic toward the end of the season.
