Utah (@1.48) vs BYU (@2.7)

Our Prediction:

Utah will win

Utah – BYU Match Prediction | 20-08-2019

Since 1995, Utah has a record of 9-2 against BYU as a favorite. Now the Utes are looking to win their ninth consecutive game over the Cougars in the series which is a winning streak that dates back to the 2010 season. The two losses for the Utes took place in 1998 and 2000. The Utes have won nine straight against BYU as favorites.

By comparison, playing Utah shouldnt be nearly as difficult as playing LSU. Both games went as most would have expected for BYU, who continues to play football as an independent. Perhaps by design, the Cougars scheduled their biggest rivalry game the week after their most difficult game. Of course, the Cougars may be lacking in confidence after getting shutout.

Thats a nice luxury to have in a big game. Offensively, the Utes made the surprising move to go with sophomore Tyler Huntley over senior Troy Smith. Utah can always decide to go back to Smith against BYU in the event Huntley struggles on the big stage. Huntley has a nice collection of receivers at his disposal and settled in nicely during the opener.

Everyone knows everyone, and it's going to get nasty when the competition starts on Saturday night. BYU has three assistants that spent time on Utah's staff, and Utah has three assistants that spent time at BYU as either players or staff members. Both Kyle Whittingham and Kilani Sitake played under Hall of Fame coach LaVell Edwards at BYU, and Sitake ascended through the coaching ranks as Whittingham's assistant at Utah for 10 seasons. While these two teams are historic rivals, the personal and professional connections make the current editions of Utah-BYU even more intense.

The improvement can be traced back to the offensive line. 100 in total offense in 2018. Brigham Young ranked No. And scored just 17 points per game. Nonetheless, it was a leap in quality from the 2017 season, when BYU went 4-9. BYU was invited to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl where they beat 49-18 Western Michigan. Or the tip of the spear, as offensive coordinator Jeff Frank Grimes calls it. The Cougars finished the season 7-6 SU and 9-4 ATS according to the best online betting sites. The Cougars averaged 27.2 points, 211.8 passing yards, and 153.2 rushing yards per game. In a vacuum, thats really rather mediocre.

The team lacks the kind of game breakers that are often necessary to win rivalry games like this, especially rivalries that have been one sided of late. All things considered, theres little about BYU that stands out. The Utes should win the battle in the trenches on defense and challenge BYU with its playmakers on offense. I firmly expect the Utes to continue their domination of this rivalry.

The Utes narrowly covered the 20.5-point spread in the victory. Zack Moss added 128 rushing yards with a touchdown. Utah got its season started with a 37-16 win at home over North Dakota. The Utes put up 499 yards of offense in the win while giving up 242 yards to North Dakota, including just 55 yards on the ground. Darren Carrington II was the main receiving target in the win, as he caught 10 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Huntley threw for 227 yards and a touchdown in the win and also rushed for 70 yards and two touchdowns.

The Utes have taken six in a row in this rivalry, as well as 11 of the last 14. Its tough to place bets on rivalry games, especially one with the nickname Holy War. But with BYU becoming favorites, Ill comfortably pick Utah to win as road underdogs.

One thing we see is that we have an incredible amount of depth, junior offensive lineman Tristen Hoge said. And then we have a lot of guys coming up fast and getting ready to play, and we saw that throughout the spring and into the offseason. Those guys are big and really working hard as a group to get better. No doubt, opined sophomore running back Lopini Katoa. We feel like were in position now to not lose much of a step at all even if someone goes down. I love what Ive seen from the offensive line.

Six of the last seven games in this series have been decided by one score, and given the intimate nature of these two staffs, you can bet it's going to be well-coached and well-schemed.
