Our Prediction:

Wisconsin will win

Wisconsin – South Florida Match Prediction | 26-08-2019 19:00

Blake Barnett, who was once one of the highest-rated recruits in the country, will be entering his second season as the USF starting quarterback. He finally has some much-needed experience under his belt, even if the USF offense faded late in 2018 and has a new offensive coordinator this year. In fact, South Florida may have a more explosive offense than Wisconsin.

With not much strength on its schedule, the Bulls will have to win this game if they are to get any early national attention from the committee. The Badgers are +10000 to win the national title. 19 Wisconsin Badgers and the South Florida Bulls met was in 2014, with the Badgers taking down the Bulls, 27-10. The last time the No. South Florida now gets a chance to avenge that loss and to get their 2019 season started on a high note when they lock horns with Wisconsin this coming Friday.

Obviously, opening the season against Wisconsin makes that a tall task. It doesnt help that all six losses were by double digits. Also, USF hasnt won a game since October 20, so the program needs to get one in the win column as soon as possible. Its vital that Strong and the Bulls quickly prove that last years poor finish was an aberration.

True freshman Graham Mertz could be the long-term answer, but Jack Coan is likely to start against South Florida. Wisconsins inconsistency at wide receiver last year wont help either. Wisconsins biggest problem last year was the quarterback position. Coan was solid but unimpressive as the backup last season, and I dont see him being much better this year.

Chryst guided the Badgers to their first 12-0 regular season in school history, while Richts Hurricanes made an even more dramatic climb to its first-ever ACC Coastal Division title and its first 10-win season since 2003. The Badgers were pushed around by Ohio State, and their defense the nations stingiest in allowing 236.9 yards per game during its 12-0 start gave up far too many big plays and allowed 449 total yards for the game.Head coaches Paul Chryst (Badgers) and Mark Richt (Hurricanes) were recognized for their accomplishments this season, and were named Coach of the Year for the Big Ten and ACC, respectively. Two teams that exceeded expectations this season will meet in the 2017 Orange Bowl on Saturday as the Wisconsin Badgers battle the Miami Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium. The regular season ended on sour notes for both No. 11 Miami as their dreams of earning a spot in the College Football Playoff came crashing to a halt with poor showings in their conference championship games. The Badgers defeated Miami 20-14 in the 2009 Champs Sports Bowl in their only previous postseason encounter. The Badgers will look to bounce back from their only loss of the season after they fell to Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game a year after losing the conference title to Penn State while the Hurricanes look to pick themselves up after consecutive losses to Pittsburgh and Clemson (in the ACC title game) to end the regular season. The Badgers and Hurricanes are both led by their defenses but both units were smoked in their respective title games. 6 Wisconsin and No. Miamis usually formidable defense barely put up a fight in giving up 38 points to Clemson more than double the 18.3 points the Hurricanes allowed in their first 11 games.

The Wisconsin Badgers are the better coached team and have earned our trust over the years, but they also have a lot of new faces on offense outside of Taylor and you just have to wonder how long it will take things to come together. The South Florida Bulls showed just how good they can be last season when they started the season with seven straight wins. Yes, the season fell apart in the final six games, but there's lots of talent on this team and they have a chance to do something in the AAC if they can just figure it out.

The unit forced just three turnovers in the two losses after forcing 19 in the prior five games. Rosier was terrific in wins over Virginia Tech and Notre Dame, but looked overwhelmed in the back-to-back losses to Pittsburgh and Clemson. Quarterback Malik Rosier accounted for 30 total touchdowns in 2017, tying Vinny Testaverdes single-season school record (1986). What didnt help was that two of the teams top three pass catchers tight end Christopher Herndon and receiver Ahmmon Richards were lost for the season right before the title game. The offense ended up averaging just 223 yards in those two losses, including just 74.5 on the ground. The defense, which is this teams bread and butter, will need to keep up their intensity, which featured 16 different players wearing the famed Turnover Chain during the year.

And even a massive improvement from Barnett and the rest of the South Florida offense wont necessarily translate to wins if the defense is as porous as it was last season, particularly during its season-ending six-game skid. The Bulls surrendered 35-pluspoints in five of those defeats, including 38 in an 18-point loss to the Marshall Thundering Herd in the Gasparilla Bowl.

With a good rushing attack to support him and more game experience, Barnett should be better set up to succeed than he was in 2018. Hes taking the tempo out of the USF offense, which could help the Bulls control the clock, especially with two running backs who gained over six yards per carry last year. New offensive coordinator Kerwin Bell could make a big difference for the Bulls. Hell also have Randall St.

South Florida News & Notes

Look for a more disciplined, sharper Wisconsin Badgers team in 2019 as Paul Chrysts troops open their season Friday night against the host South Florida Bulls. Despite going into the 2018 season as one of the top teams in the nation, the Badgers settled for an 8-5 record and a one-sided but largely meaningless win over the Miami Hurricanes in the Pinstripe Bowl.

I dont know if the Bulls can pull off the win, but I think theyll make this a close game and beat the spread. Also, I trust Strong to fix some of the issues that plagued USF late last year, especially on defense. I lost a lot of trust in Wisconsin over the course of last season, and Im not sure theres enough to make me believe in them right off the bat in 2019.

Miamis resurgent program has brought the fans back to south Florida and they are excited to see their team one more time this year. Even though Wisconsin is the better team in my opinion playing a true road game in the postseason is going to be awfully tough. Ill take the points in what should be a low-scoring affair.
